Infinity

Infinity is a meditation on the unending cycle of existence—where life, death, suffering, renewal, and hope are inseparably intertwined. Carved from a single piece of timber, the sculpture presents humanity's journey not as a straight path with a beginning and an end, but as a continuous rhythm that repeats across generations.

The composition unfolds in a circular narrative. Along the upper register, figures move through different stages of human experience. The elderly, the burdened, and the vulnerable represent the inevitable passage of time, while the carrying of children and the procession of people symbolise birth, responsibility, inheritance, and the continuation of life. Each figure becomes part of an eternal procession, reminding us that every generation follows the footsteps of the one before it.

At the heart of the work stands the skeletal figure of Death. Rather than being portrayed as a villain, Death occupies the centre as an impartial force of nature—neither cruel nor compassionate, but constant. Holding the scythe, it serves as the silent reminder that mortality is the only certainty shared by every living being. Beside it, a feminine figure bearing fruit introduces a powerful counterbalance: fertility, nourishment, and the promise of new life. Together they form two inseparable forces, suggesting that endings and beginnings cannot exist without one another.

The lower register shifts from humanity to the natural world. Livestock, birds, and flowing water represent the cycle of nature, where every living creature is equally subject to birth, survival, and eventual return to the earth. The swans emerging from the water evoke transformation and purity, while the animals gathered together emphasise that the laws governing life extend beyond humanity itself.

The surrounding landscape binds these stories into one timeless environment. Mountains stand as silent witnesses to countless generations, unchanged while human lives rise and fall beneath them. The carved grain of the timber itself reinforces this idea; every natural line in the wood becomes a metaphor for time, growth, and memory embedded within nature.

Through Infinity, the sculpture invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between mortality and renewal. It suggests that death is not the opposite of life, but one essential part of an infinite continuum. Every ending creates space for another beginning, every generation leaves behind another to continue the journey, and every life contributes to an eternal cycle that stretches far beyond the individual.

Rather than offering a narrative of despair or celebration, Infinity presents a quiet acceptance of existence itself—a reminder that while individual lives are finite, the rhythm of life continues endlessly, connecting humanity, nature, and time in an everlasting circle.
